Being laid off from a job you love is more than a mere lay off. After all, your support network is no longer there to greet you daily. They are not there to say “a job well done” when you mastered a new technique or managed to put up with an obnoxious individual or even a rude boss.
Lay off means that your health insurance is no longer in force. Oh yeah…you may be offered COBRA for a few months, but that is expensive, especially if you are collecting unemployment. So you opt out and hope that your health holds up. Unemployment checks barely cover your daily expenses and gas gets expensive when you have to use the car to look for work.
Life iinsurance? At one time your family was taken care of. No more. Your company’s life insurance quit the day you got laid off. You now have nothing to offer your family that would help with their future endeavors.
Yes…layoffs are more than layoffs. Your livelihood has been severely reduced. Your mental health is affected and fighting that feeling that you are no longer useful is an all day project. A quiet house during the day can get very “loud” and all of a sudden you welcome the 5:00 hour for a different reason. You need companionship – someone to talk to.
Time does heal and pretty soon you feel the need to decide whether to seek other employment or even become self employed. The latter seems to be far more appealing as you can “call the shots” and who knows, find out what you are made of.
Whatever the reason…may anyone facing lay off find themselves in a better position as they start down an unfamiliar road to their future with familiar skills they already possess.
