The latest news in the economy. Deficit will rise to almost nine trillion dollars. There will be no yearly cost of living increase with recipients of social security. To make matters worse, Medicare cost is increasing. And the social security checks are paying for that increase. Coupled with this is the fact that social services have been and are being cut. Those very services that have and should continue to benefit the elderly and the very young.
What I am noticing is that the economy is targeting the less fortunate. In this economy, the elderly cannot find a job to supplement lost social security income, let alone have the energy to do so. The very young are affected because they are not receiving needed help to be able to grow into responsible adults.
Families throughout this country are concerned with the basics, being able to pay the rent/mortgage, put food on the table and keep the home warm through the winter. Let alone afford gas in order to go to work or to even find work. There are many counties in the triple digit unemployment. Many family heads have lost their jobs due to no fault of their own and now have to struggle to make ends meet where once it was affordable.
Never mind the mental health being affected. Depression is on the rise; suicide is on the rise and of course child abuse cases are hitting record numbers. Frustration and a cynical attitude can be the nucleus to those horrible statistics. Who suffers? The very young and the elderly.
Is there an answer? In this out of control society? Perhaps not. But…we can start small – within our family to expand to include close friends and eventually people within the community. A healthy family has the strength and energy to “weather” any storm. Even if it is financial. To do so with a shoulder to lean on makes it that much easier.
Let’s face it. There really is no easy answer. Necessities are very important and to distinguish between wants and needs, a priority. It can be done. Encouraging savings instead of wanton spending can be attainable goals that will help in this worsening economy.
