Is financial security possible in these stressful economic times?  If so, what can you do to assure that there will be money for you and your family?  Where do you start cleaning up your money woes?  Obviously, no one else can help you unless you help yourself.  To do so, there are 10 steps you can adopt to help with your financial recovery.

  • Pay yourself.  Each payday, systematically put some money into an emergency savings fund.  It’s like paying a bill – with you being the “bill”.
  • Cut spending.  Downsize.  Trim grocery bills.  Purchase ground beef instead of steak. If possible, rent a room in your home or move in with a friend while building your emergency savings fund.
  • Carry a small note pad.  Write down every cent you spend.  You will be able to chart where you are “wasting” money before it becomes unmanageable.
  • Set financial goals.  Along the way, chart checkpoints to make sure you will meet whatever goals you have established for yourself.  Getting rid of credit card(s) debts is a good starting point.
  • Get a second job.  Work both ends – cutting your expenses and increasing your income.  The additional job could be something you enjoy doing if you choose to work. Might as well have fun while working towards your financial goals.
  • Pay off high interest loans systemically and continue doing so with other outstanding loans, including credit card balances.
  • Pay bills online.  Doing so helps increase your credit score and keeps you aligned with your established budget course.
  • Find out your credit score.  A good credit score will help in finding affordable loans, automobiles and even homes.  Aim for a score of more than 700.
  • Repair credit reports.  You are able to obtain free credit report from the three main credit bureaus, Experian, Equifax and TransUnion.  Do this once a year.
  • Every now and then, assess your situations.  Climbing out of debt takes patience but it can be done.

During these stressful times, your debt can be managed and even eliminated.  If you do manage to achieve your goals –CONGRATULATIONS!  A job well done.
